Republican Candidate for the Cabarrus County Commission

COL (Ret.) Russell V Olson Jr. (Odell Community)

As we approach the 2024 elections, it is imperative that we stick with success and keep the “winning team” led by county commissioner Steve Morris. Under Steve’s leadership as chairman since 2014, collaborative efforts among elected officials at municipal and county levels have dramatically improved. This spirit of cooperation has reaped solid economic benefits for the citizens of our county. It is critical that the business-friendly environment created under Steve’s leadership continue to take full advantage of the opportunities offered by our county’s proximity to major markets and favorable quality of life.

Integrity, business experience, leadership and commitment to our community are strengths Steve brings to our board of commissioners. With a proven track record of accomplishments, he is poised to lead our county to even greater economic growth.

I urge my fellow citizens to vote for Steve Morris in the upcoming Republican primary and then in the general election.

Kristin Baker (NC State Representative)

North Carolina enjoys a robust state economy with unparalleled investment and job creation by both small businesses and companies locating here. North Carolina is repeatedly recognized as a business-friendly state in multiple national rankings.

I have served in the North Carolina State House representing Cabarrus County since 2020. Working together in the General Assembly, Sen. Paul Newton, Rep. Kevin Crutchfield, and I are pleased to report that we secured more than $185 million for the people of Cabarrus County.

This state money has gone to help agencies and organizations on the front lines of critical needs in our community – the Cabarrus County Sheriff Department, Concord Police Department, volunteer fire departments who struggle to fund operations and retain help, Rowan Cabarrus Community College, the Harrisburg YMCA, the Concord Airport, Cooperative Christian Ministries, the Water and Sewer Authority of Cabarrus County. Additionally, these funds have supported much needed infrastructure critical to our community, including the development of a firefighters training facility in Midland, and the construction of sidewalks in Mt. Pleasant. Every one of these efforts enhances the wellbeing of our citizens.

Bringing state money back to Cabarrus County so we can continue to attract new business and industry requires a team; Sen. Newton, Rep. Crutchfield, and I cannot do it alone. We need leaders at the local level who are forward-thinking and pro-business. Steve Morris is one of those leaders. During the time I have served in the N.C. House, Steve has been a consistent and trusted partner, one who identifies needs, does his homework, and then works with those of us serving at the state level to try to find solutions and qualify for state money.

He has been a driving force in aggressively recruiting more than 71 new businesses and industries like Eli Lilly pharmaceutical company to Cabarrus County.

Steve has worked to restore Cabarrus County’s reputation as a place where elected officials are willing to work together to get things done. This occurs informally throughout the year but is strengthened by dedicated forums like the quarterly Public Official Summits at which all city, town and county elected officials gather to discuss the most pressing needs of our residents. These meetings help eliminate duplication of efforts. And that saves taxpayers money.

Steve is also working with those of us at the state level to find new uses for the Stonewall Jackson Training School property so that these deteriorating historic buildings can be salvaged and placed back on the tax books, again saving taxpayer money.

During my time in the N.C. House, I have relied on Steve Morris to represent the interests of our citizens in Cabarrus County in a genuine and selfless manner. He has consistently demonstrated that he leads with honesty and integrity.

Steve Morris is running for re-election to the Cabarrus County Commission in the upcoming Republican primary. I am pleased to support and endorse him. I hope you will join me in voting for Steve. He is the strong and effective leader we need.

Tom Ramseur (Former Cabarrus County Chamber Executive)

I am pleased to write this letter of endorsement and support for the reelection of Steve Morris for Cabarrus County Commissioner. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Steve Morris for many years and have observed, firsthand, his dedication to all of the citizens of Cabarrus County.

I served as the CEO of the Cabarrus Chamber of Commerce for 15 years. During that time, Steve was a valuable member of our board of directors and also served a term as our Board Chair. We worked on many economic development projects, not only in attracting new business and industry but also putting a priority on supporting existing business and industry.

One of Steve’s top priorities was also to support and retain small businesses in Cabarrus County. He still believes that this is most important. He also knows that developing and maintaining a first-class workforce is paramount to benefit our citizens and employers.

Steve has proven himself in his years as a business owner and County Commissioner, serving with leadership, vision, and integrity. I encourage you to vote to reelect Steve Morris in the primary on March 5. Thank you.

Diane Honeycutt (Former Cabarrus County Commissioner)

I am writing to express my unequivocal endorsement for the re-election of Steve Morris, our current County Commissioner Chairman and a remarkable leader, who seeks to continue his commendable service for a fourth term. His remarkable talent for consensus-building has allowed diverse perspectives to be recognized and incorporated, ultimately leading to effective and meaningful solutions for our county.

One of Steve’s greatest strengths lies in his remarkable ability to piece together the intricate puzzle of our county’s needs, challenges, and opportunities. With his keen analytical mind and comprehensive understanding of our community, Steve has been able to identify the critical issues affecting our citizens and develop innovative strategies to address them head-on. His unparalleled ability to connect the dots has been instrumental in producing positive outcomes and tangible improvements for our county.

Under Steve’s leadership, our county has witnessed remarkable progress across various domains, including infrastructure development, public safety, education, mental health, economic growth, and fiscal responsibility. By re-electing Steve we can be confident that our county will continue to thrive and flourish under his capable guidance.

Steve is someone who is not driven by self-serving motives but rather by the genuine desire to make a positive difference in the lives of our community members. His integrity and commitment to public service are truly commendable, creating a sense of trust and confidence among the electorate.

Let us come together and ensure that our county continues to benefit from the invaluable leadership and expertise of Steve Morris. Please join me in supporting his re-election campaign and casting your vote for a candidate who is genuinely dedicated to serving the public good.

Unaffiliated voters now outnumber Republicans and Democrats registered to vote in Cabarrus County.

Take a look at the Cabarrus Board of Elections website. It shows 58,618 Unaffiliated, followed by 51,397 Republicans, 43,819 Democrats and 1,228 Libertarians.

If you are registered Unaffiliated, you are eligible to vote in the primary election. Your vote matters. All state and national elected offices are important, but the decisions made by the Cabarrus County commissioners impact our lives every single day.

This year, there are six Republicans running for two seats on the county commission.

In the primary, voters registered as Unaffiliated can vote in either the Republican, Democrat, or Libertarian primary. When you go vote, you’ll be asked which party’s primary you’d like to vote in. Ask for the Republican ballot so you can vote for Steve Morris for county commissioner.

No one running is more qualified or is a stronger leader than Steve. I have known him for a long time and I can truly say that Steve listens to our needs, does his homework to see all sides, and makes decisions in the best interest of all citizens.

As an Unaffiliated voter, don’t sit on the sidelines. Make your voice heard. Early voting starts February 15 at the Board of Elections office on Church Street in Concord. If you’d rather vote on Election Day, circle March 5 on your calendar and go that day.

I am concerned about the future of our county and the impact the decisions our future county commissioners will make. I am registered Unaffiliated and when I vote, I’ll ask for a Republican ballot so I can vote for Steve Morris for Cabarrus County Commission. I hope you’ll join me.

Grace Mynatt (Former Cabarrus County School Board Member and Cabarrus County Commissioner)

While we are hearing a constant barrage of national election news, we must not forget that it will soon be time to vote for our local officials as well. In many ways your local votes will impact you sooner and more individually, so it is best that we know our candidates well.

I had the honor of serving for many years on the Cabarrus Board of Education and the Board of Commissioners. I believe I can speak to the qualifications of our current Commissions chairman, Steve Morris, and urge your vote to return him to that Commission.

Steve Morris is a tireless worker for all our citizens. Few of us know the extent of meetings he attends throughout the county. While this is very time-consuming, Steve handles it all with the same calm, measured approach we need in this position.

Steve Morris has my complete and enthusiastic support. We need Steve’s service to remain on the Cabarrus County Commission.

Lynn Shue (Cabarrus County Commissioner)

Since 2012, when I first met Steve Morris, at the time, I was a member of the Cabarrus County School Board. Since then, I have found him to be a man of integrity and is as honest as the day is long. Steve’s compassion for Cabarrus County is second to none. Under Steve’s leadership as our Chairman of the County Commissioners, we have been able to accomplish quite a number of infrastructure projects that were long overdue. To mention a few, a new courthouse, a new parking deck in downtown Concord, a new Emergency Services building, a new Infrastructure and Asset Management building, a new IT Department building, and many School Maintenance needs.

In addition to the infrastructure builds, we have continually increased Teacher Supplements to a record high of 12% and we have increased County Employee salaries to be competitive with our neighboring counties. We have also continued to build schools. We currently have a request from Cabarrus County Schools for $1 billion for more schools to accommodate the growth that is projected to be coming to Cabarrus County.

To my Friends, Family, and supporters, I would certainly appreciate your support for Steve Morris for County Commissioner. The Primary is on March 5th and it is sooooo very important that everyone get out and vote.

Roger Haas (Former Kannapolis City Council Member)

I am writing to express my wholehearted support for the re-election of Steve Morris who has served our community as a dedicated county commissioner for the past twelve years.

In addition to his focus on public safety and mental health, Steve Morris has displayed exceptional dedication to enhancing our quality of life here in Cabarrus County. By spearheading initiatives that promote recreational facilities, parks, and cultural events, he has fostered an environment where families can thrive and create lasting memories. This commitment to quality of life not only ensures a better future for our children but also attracts new businesses and economic opportunities to our county.

One of the qualities that sets Steve apart is his ability to bring diverse stakeholders together to find common ground. His collaborative leadership style has resulted in numerous successful projects and initiatives. By nurturing a spirit of cooperation, Steve has harnessed the collective wisdom of community leaders, citizens, and public servants to develop and implement policies and programs that address the needs of all residents.

Under Steve’s leadership, while accomplishing exceptional services for our citizens, the county has earned the distinction of a triple-A rating by Fitch Ratings and Moody’s Investors Service – 2 of the National Bonding Rating Agencies which is the first time in the history of the County.

Steve’s commitment to provide top-notch services for our citizens has been achieved with the economic philosophy of prudence in government spending and debt. These triple-A ratings show he has been successful in achieving both goals.

Cyndie Mynatt (President, Ben Mynatt Family of Dealerships)

It is my belief that growth, wisely managed, benefits us all.

New businesses, new well-paying jobs, new places to explore on the weekends, new parks and trails, new friends and neighbors, new restaurants, new shops, new schools.

Good growth, even in Cabarrus County, is not a given. Much of this bounty of new opportunities that we enjoy is the result of careful planning and management and a myriad of large and small decisions made by our locally elected officials over many years.

Steve Morris, as Cabarrus County Commissioner since 2012, has been instrumental in making the carefully thought-out decisions which have attracted beneficial growth to Cabarrus County.

I am grateful for Steve’s willingness to serve, his steady and wise leadership and his commitment to improve the lives of all Cabarrus County citizens. The future is truly in our hands. I support the re-election of Steve Morris to the Cabarrus County Commission so that we may continue to enjoy the good growth that will give us a future that we and our children can be proud of.

Dakeita Vanderburg (Broker, Team Honeycutt)

With the 2024 primary election happening in just a few weeks, I’m trying to learn as much as I can about the people running for office. There will be the usual onslaught of TV commercials about the presidential candidates to shape our opinion. Personally, I’m tired of the name-calling and backstabbing that has caused people who are good leaders and of good character to avoid running for office.

I’m paying close attention to the local races, especially the county commission race. I want to understand who is running for office and why.

As I looked recently at the names of the six Republicans running for county commissioner, there were several names I recognized – one for his extremist views and embarrassing comments that made headlines while he was a legislator, one running against something, one running against someone and there’s at least one that just seems to have an axe to grind.

Out of these six Republicans, it was refreshing to find one that stood FOR something. That is candidate Steve Morris. He’s FOR keeping taxes low. He’s FOR eliminating wasteful spending. He’s FOR creating good-paying jobs here in Cabarrus County.

Steve Morris has lived a life of service to this community. He cares for people. He cares about our future and has a vision for it. I hope you’ll join me in voting for Steve Morris in the upcoming Republican primary for county commission.

Laura Heggins (Retired Captain CCSO/Former Member Mental Health Advisory Committee)

Our children face more pressure than ever from many sources – their peers, social media, and expectations to perform on school testing, just to name a few. The mental health of our children and the impact on their future health is something that should concern us all.

I saw this firsthand during the 30 years I worked with the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office. Many people may not realize it, but if your child has an emotional issue that’s severe enough to cause an emergency room visit, your child can be placed in state protective custody and transported by the sheriff’s department to a facility in another area of the state, likely Raleigh.

Imagine your child suffering emotional upheaval placed in the back of a law enforcement vehicle for a two-hour ride to a place unknown and not near family. The reason – we don’t have a treatment facility in Cabarrus County, but thanks to the efforts of Steve Morris, soon, there will be a behavioral health facility here in Cabarrus County.

Steve Morris listened to health care and law enforcement professionals as we expressed concerns about the needs for public awareness of mental health issues faced by the children and adults in our community and the need to improve access to treatment and recovery.

He worked directly with legislators to get $32.5 million in state money to build a new mental health facility right here in Cabarrus County. When a federal grant became available, Steve Morris worked to get $3.5 million so a behavioral health emergency department could be built at our local hospital, Atrium Health.

Having care and treatment close to home can mean everything when our children or loved ones are suffering. I’m proud that Steve Morris cared enough about some of the most vulnerable people in our community and stepped up to help.

I’ll be voting to elect Steve Morris to the Cabarrus County Commission in the upcoming Republican primary. I hope you’ll consider joining me.

Jim and Ginny Amendum

For several years, we have had the privilege of crossing paths with Steve Morris, Cabarrus citizen and County Commissioner. The strength of his tenure as a public servant is defined by countless positive qualities and considerations.

Steve consistently meets his work as a Commissioner with ethics, thoughtfulness, and understanding, His vision for our Cabarrus County communities is broad and inclusive. For example, he has worked to support business and economic development, embraced hard work to expand and improve the quality of our school facilities, and championed the often overlooked and severely underfunded area of early childhood care and education. Steve addresses these crucial considerations and others, working tirelessly to build and ensure community components that provide safety, good health, and prosperity for all of us.

Steve has been a stand out leader in our community, and intensive team player, and a great listener! Let’s thank him for his service by re-electing him for another term.

Steve Steinbacher (Co-Owner, Cabarrus Brewing Co.)

In the past 12 years, Cabarrus County has seen historic growth in new business and industry locating here. There have been 71 new companies and they invested $3.5 billion dollars in our community. They created 7,000 new, good-paying jobs. The average wage has increased from around $35,000 in 2012 to $47,768 now.

When companies move here, we win. They pay property taxes, offsetting the tax burden for residential property owners like you and me. New companies have generated $25.9 million dollars in additional tax revenue.

Without these investments, our property tax rate would have increased from its current rate of 74 cents to 83 cents. On a home valued at $250,000, that increase would have meant homeowners would have paid $250 more in property taxes.

There are many state and local leaders and organizations involved in recruiting new industry including the Cabarrus Economic Development Commission and elected officials.

Cabarrus County Commissioner Steve Morris has been a chief advocate and supporter of economic investment during his service on the board. He has been a steady and common-sense leader who understands the needs not only for big businesses, but for small businesses, too.

In addition to helping recruit industry, he has been a supporter of the Cabarrus Center and Flywheel, and organization that provides affordable space and support to startups, entrepreneurs and new small businesses.

I would like to see Cabarrus County continue to be known for being a good place to do business. Steve Morris has the experience, leadership and reputation for guiding these efforts. Consider joining me in voting Steve Morris for County Commission in the upcoming Republican primary.

Frances Griffin Foley (4th generation native Concord/Retired Educator)
Tim Foley (LtCol USMC, Retired)

We have had the privilege of knowing Steve for many years and think so very highly of him. We admire the countless hours that he has dedicated to making Cabarrus County such a wonderful place to live. For twelve years, Steve has worked tirelessly to recruit businesses and industry to our county, keep our taxes low, and assure economic prosperity for all of Cabarrus County! Steve has proven over and over again throughout the past twelve years that he represents all the people of Cabarrus County. In addition to serving as a Cabarrus County Commissioner, often as chair, Steve has also shown his altruistic spirit by volunteering on innumerable committees, many times in leadership positions. We especially admire the work Steve has done to make mental health a priority for our county and believe mental health care in Cabarrus County will become a model for all of North Carolina. We urge all who care about the future of our great county to join us in re-electing a dedicated public servant with a proven record of putting the welfare of Cabarrus County first and foremost!

Noelle Rhodes Scott and Edward Scott (Concord)

In his eleven years on the board, Steve Morris has focused on serving this community. He is always well-prepared and understands the issues at hand. He meets with constituents, gets to know each sector of our diverse community, listens and hears all positions, and works tirelessly behind the scenes. He is a moderating influence during contentious meetings and respects his fellow Commissioners. Steve Morris has always made the well-being of the citizens across Cabarrus County his top priority.

Cabarrus County needs honest leaders. We need our elected officials to work for the people rather than to push specific agenda. We need Commissioners who are respectful of each other, and value honest discourse. Our entire community benefits when our leaders accept their role with an attitude of service rather than the desire for power.

Steve Morris has proven that he is this kind of leader.

James Bailey (Former Chief Deputy – Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office)

I recently retired after 30 years of service with the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office. During my last 4.5 years, I was the Chief Deputy with the agency. The Chief Deputy supervises and manages the day to day operations of the office. In this position, I had the pleasure and honor of working alongside Steve dealing with many matters that affected the Sheriff’s Office.

In every instance, I found him to be professional, diligent, and honest. He was always concerned with the safety of the community and he always worked to ensure that the employees, those that work day after day serving and protecting the citizens of Cabarrus County, were treated fairly and given all of the tools that they needed to do their jobs.

He was always willing to speak with me anytime that I needed him and he was always ready to assist if called upon. Steve is a wonderful ambassador for Cabarrus County and he has my 100% support in his re-election to the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners.

Margaret Dabbs (Broker, ABR at Allen Tate Realtors)

Dear Fellow Cabarrus County Residents,

I believe all elections are important, every primary, every local, every state, every national… all elections. It is our right, privilege, and obligation to learn who all the candidates are, to study their qualifications, to see what they stand for, to understand if they stand on their own two feet for the betterment of the whole, and to make up our minds about whom we feel will do the best job to further not just their agenda, but what is best for all of us. I mean all, not just a certain population or certain segment.

And with that being said, I want to ask for your support of Steve Morris. But first, I refer back to my first paragraph, if you don’t know Steve, learn about him and what he stands for, learn what he has already done for Cabarrus County. Learn about his character, his ability to study situations and make objective decisions based on equality and worth of all people. In his years as a Cabarrus County Commissioner, he has proven that ability over and over. His end game is always what is the best solution for the greater good, and in this case Cabarrus County. Steve has the wisdom, experience and firsthand knowledge of how to navigate challenges, strike a balance between listening to all sides and move to unification for the best solution.

Get involved, get educated, and help get the vote out! Every last one of us has an opportunity to be active in deciding who should help Cabarrus County navigate our future. I have decided in the race for Cabarrus County Commissioner, I pick Steve Morris and I hope you do too!

Howard Irvin (Attorney)

I am endorsing Steve Morris for County Commissioner. Steve has served all the citizens of Cabarrus for over 11 years. During that time we have seen tremendous growth in our county. Steve has focused on the future needs of the county while honoring the past and serving the present. Steve recognizes the importance of educational opportunities for our young people. He was instrumental in supporting supplemental pay for teachers in order to retain experienced educators. Steve has lead the way in creating three Early College High Schools to empower youth to attain their goals of college and careers. And he has worked tirelessly to provide a post high school avenue to advanced education at Rowan Cabarrus Community College. He has worked with industries to provide training at RCCC to support their needs and provide employees who are ready to work the first day on the job.

In the past 11 years, under Steve’s leadership we have seen new schools, new and improved parks, new industry committing to Cabarrus County, new jobs, improved mental health facilities, and services, and a stronger county leadership. Let’s keep Steve on the Board of Commissioners.

David W. Phillips (Former Concord City Councilman, Retired from Duke Energy)

This letter is written in support of Steve Morris who is running for re-election to the Cabarrus County Commission.

I have known Steve for many years and have worked with him both as an elected official and through his service to the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce. In both capacities, I found Steve to always and consistently be rock steady in performing the duties and responsibilities he had. Steve is an excellent listener and gathers all of the facts and information available before making decisions.

Cabarrus County has been fortunate to have Steve Morris serve us as both a Commissioner and also as Chair of the Commission. Public service is a tough job – and it’s getting more difficult all of the time to find good people that are willing to serve the citizens and deal with all of the time away from families, voluminous emails, numerous phone calls, social media communications, meetings, etc. In all of the years I have known Steve and worked with him, I have never heard him complain about any of these things. He is a true public servant.

Please join me in voting for Steve Morris for Cabarrus County Commission, and for continued good government in Cabarrus County.

Marie Kluttz (Former Regional Manager, Lillibridge Healthcare Services)

I have known Steve Morris for many years. He and I have served together on various Boards, including the Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce and United Way of Central Carolinas. Without hesitation, I can attest to Steve’s abilities and strong commitment to do a stellar job on anything that he sets out to do. Steve is a strong professional leader, and does the necessary research to enable himself to make the best possible decisions for our county. I ask for your support to re-elect Steve Morris to the Cabarrus County Commission. His years of knowledge and service will serve us well.

Grant and Patti Rader (Kannapolis, NC)

Patti and I have known Steve Morris for quite a number of years, well before he became a County Commissioner. At all times, his Character and integrity have impressed us. He is a Man of his word, dedicated to service and has performed admirably as the Chairman and Member of our Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners. It is our intent to Vote for Steve. We hope you will join us. Let’s keep Steve Morris working for us and continuing to serve us on the Board of Commissioners. Thank you.

Phylis Beaver (Letter to the Editor, Salibury Post)

Anytime Steve Morris’ name is mentioned in a crowd, someone will invariably make the comment, “he’s the hardest working man I know” or “that talented man can do anything.” Combine those two characteristics with his intelligence and good common sense and you will find the leadership you have been looking for in a Cabarrus County Commissioner. Steve’s experience in business uniquely qualifies him to understand the current struggles in our economy for small business and large business. His small business, the Gem Theater, lies within 50 feet of the single largest layoff in the history of the state of North Carolina. Steve Morris understands job loss.

I first met Steve in 1971 when he was 17 years old working at Mills Florist. Up until he was 17, he earned money mowing yards and working at his uncle’s furniture store, Central Furniture Company. Many in our community remember him from working at the Farm and Garden Center in the Midway section of Kannapolis. Occasionally, Steve resurrects his skills perfected at the old Mills Florist Shop to produce wonderful works of art for friends and family. After selling his interest in the Farm and Garden Center and Mills Florist, he eventually purchased Clyde Scarboro’s interest in the Gem Theatre and assumed sole responsibility at the Gem upon Carlyle Rutledge’s death in 2008. Steve Morris understands work.

I have worked with Steve Morris since 1971. Thirty one years is a long time with ample opportunity to learn a man’s character. In all those years, he has consistently proven himself to be a man of great integrity and great intelligence. The people of Cabarrus County have a rare opportunity to vote for a candidate who does not seek personal gain, but genuinely cares about the direction our leadership is taking us. Steve Morris understands what needs to be done in Cabarrus County.

Brandon Wilson (Recreation & Sport Management, Univ. of Tennessee)

Stephen Morris began at the Gem Theatre in July of 1995 as part-owner, vice-president and general manager. I have been fortunate enough to know Steve extensively through working for the theatre and community projects since the spring of 2008. Steve is an exemplary leader, decision maker and friend. He is always dependable and is great with developing unique and successful ideas.

I know Steve is trustworthy and he is loyal. I am never concerned that he does not have anyone’s or the company’s best interest at heart. He is courteous and helpful to people and to customers, often going the extra mile to be helpful as well as being well respected. I know he will excel at administering the county government and any endeavor he pursues.

I appreciate the mentor he has been to me. Steve has helped me improve my communication skills tremendously. He is wise, friendly and has taught me great people skills and customer service techniques. Steve is personable and has a great interest in serving as a true community leader and spokesman.

Steve is inquisitive, informative, enlightening and very interested in mastering every decision and task. He is always anxious to help with community opportunities and has helped an abundance of people in many diverse ways. Steve’s positive values are treasured, and I am sure he will support, benefit and serve the community in fascinating and effective ways.

Please do not hesitate to contact me. I am happy to offer any further support.
